    Hydroxychloroquine and sulfa allergy

Antibiotics containing chemicals called sulfonamides can trigger a reaction if you have a sulfa allergy. These antibiotics include combination drugs: An allergy to sulfonamide medications is different from having an adverse reaction to wine or food that contains sulfites.

I have a sulfa allergy, and have taken Plaquenil for 4 years without any adverse effects. I can say, however, that I have not had any cross allergic reaction to other drugs sometimes associated with sulfa allergies. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Hydroxychloroquine HCQ, sold under the brand name Plaquenil among others, is a medication used for the prevention and treatment of certain types of malaria. Specifically it is used for chloroquine-sensitive malaria. Other uses include treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and porphyria cutanea tarda. It is taken by mouth.

If you have HIV/AIDS, you may have an increased sensitivity to sulfonamide medications. Having a reaction to sulfites in something you eat or drink doesn't mean you'll be allergic to sulfonamide medication.

Hydroxychloroquine and eye symptoms Funny I tried Plaquenil a few times in the past just to see if I could tolerate it and after one dose the ache started then too but I never had the other symptoms as I stopped it immediately. Now I feel I need it again so I persisted and the other symptoms popped up. No one seems to know what "pre" toxic symptoms might be.
