    Hydroxychloroquine immune suppressant

Had symtoms of malar rash, joint pain especially in hands, fatigue , dry eyes and dry skin . Had a biopsy of skin and confirmed cutaneous lupus. I was put on Plaquenil and for the past 8 years I have been fine with it . Now this year I have been having things pop up that are related to a low immune system.

Howdy LadyDi, sorry you are having problems. Plaquenil is what is call an immune modifier. It is not a immune suppressant. Originally it was used to prevent Malaria. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil Is An Tl, et al. 2017Hu SC, et al. 2016ConclusionReference I think you need to discuss this issue with your RD. Let him or her know you want some control, but not to make your immune system go permanently insane. I do think that Plaquenil is the mildest drug you can find. I think they all get stronger and more immune-suppressant from there, but I might be wrong!

Does anybody have any input concerning taking Plaquenil for long term therapy ? Some of my doctors think It is the Plaquenil causing it but then some say that Plaquenil is not an immunosuppressant drug that for some reason my immune system is out of wack . I tried to only take 100 mg to see if it would make a difference but I started with terrible joint pain and fatigue so I am back on the 200 mg a day.
